On the afternoon of June 13, 2018, the institute invited Perry Yang, the Associate Professor of Department of Urban Planning and Architecture of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Director of the ESD studio and Chair Professor of Department of Environment and Technology of the United Nations Environmental Protection Agency - Tongji University Covestro (Bayer Materials) to give a special lecture entitled "Design and Application of Intelligent Materials in Smart Cities" at the 3F Academic Lecture Hall. The lecture was hosted by chief engineer Ma Xiangming and a total of more than 120 technicians of the institute attended the lecture.

Associate professor Perry Yang was giving a special lecture

Professor Yang first reviewed the influence of information technology on the traditional planning industry since the 1990s, and pointed out that, under the general background of climate warming and environmental change, the connection between the intelligent materials and planning and design in the future will be closer, but there are not much researches currently. Then Professor Yang introduced the carbon emission measurement and evaluation tools, as well as the characteristics of intelligent materials, including less environmental impact, lower energy consumption, more recyclable utilization, greener and healthier, easier integration, and more aesthetic value, etc.

After that, Professor Yang introduced the three projects of Covestro Material Co., Ltd. to demonstrate the influence of intelligent materials on the city: Firstly, polyurethane materials are used for the urban renewal of Workers Village in Shanghai, and the BIM model is used to calculate the energy consumption of full life cycle of materials from transportation to the construction, so as to reduce carbon emissions; Secondly, polycarbonate materials are used in the Lujiazui reconstruction project, and 3D technology is utilized to simulate visibility, to replace glass as the media curtain wall of buildings, and adjust the senses and light comfort of people, and even create a completely new urban space; Thirdly, the new road pavement paving materials are used for the construction of sponge cities. The materials are featured with porous structures for water permeation and storage, and can relieve the pressure of urban drainage network and reduce the disasters caused by urban inland inundation.

Last but not least, Professor Yang showed us how the advanced design concepts such as smart city, smart transportation, green ecology, zero energy consumption, and thermal comfort, etc. can be applied to specific projects by sharing the competition case of key project (Asian Games Village) urban design in 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

In the Lecture

Mr. Ma commented that “The birth of great ideas often requires our extensive understanding of various areas and the integration of the existing concepts. Thanks to the lecture by Perry, it introduced us to the design and application of smart materials in smart cities, which is the field less contacted by the planners. Therefore, it is very inspiring to the technical personnel of the institute."

After the lecture, many technical backbones including deputy chief planner Li Jianping, Gong Bin from Planning Institute 1, Chen Yang from Housing Policy Research Center, etc. conducted exchanges and discussions with Prof. Yang. Eventually, chief engineer Ma Xiangming extended his gratitude to Professor Yang Perry for his coming for exchanges at the institute.
